I have been suffering from hyperkeratosed tissue on the anterior aspect of my upper palate for three years. I have been to a periondontist, as well as an oral surgeon, and was biopsied twice. The pathology reports were negative for malignancy, but indicated acanthosis and hyperkeratosis. Since there was no malignancy, the doctors became uninterested, and offered no treatment. From my reading, this sounds like symptoms of HPV in some cases. Are there any professionals who have experience with this?

Not a professional, but I had biopsies of mild dysplasia and hyperkeratosis from one spot on my tongue for 15 years before I finally grew a tumor (SCC) at that spot -- BTW, I had used tobacco and alcohol, but had quit tobacco 35 years and alcohol 11 years before the tumor -- Watchful Waiting is the key here, you become the expert on your mouth and get a biopsy when anything changes.

HPV is a virus with well over a 100 different strains and at least 4 of those have been associated with cancers including Oral Cancer. HPV+ oral cancers are most often associated with the Base of Tongue and Tonsils and most have spread to the lymph nodes on one or both sides of the neck before the cancer is discovered.

While I'm certainly not an expert, I would assume that the cellular changes taking a normal cell to a cancerous one is similar when the HPV virus is the cause. Stay diligent but remember it's not cancer until it's been confirmed by a biopsy.

hyperkeratosis is not a mandatory precursor to malignancy. It happens for all kinds of reasons that are benign, irritation of a rough filling against the adjacent soft tissue with cause hyperkeratosis, or a toughening of the tissue to protect itself. This isn't something that is a known indicator of an oncoming negative event. it just is what it is. This doesn't mean you shouldn't watch the area for other developments, but by itself I wouldn't concern myself too much with this.

Bill,
You say you have been "suffering" from hyperkeratosis of the anterior palate. Would you be so kind to let me know what symptoms your are experiencing? I would also like to know if you use tobacco and/or alcohol on a regular basis. How long ago did you first experience problems?
I'd like to try and help you if I can I just need a little more information in order to give you proper advice.
Contact me by PM or e-mail if you wish.
Cheers,
Mike
