Liz, my heart goes out to you. As I've written before, I, also, was harmed by a dentist not well-trained in recognizing oral cancer, even after 8 months, and with it spreading in a classic fashion practically before his eyes. He cauterized it twice, finally sending me to the periodontist for treatment of gum disease! I considered suing, and decided that, since I am the patient, I needed my energies to be as positive as possible as I healed, for my own sake, and not to be focused on the negative aspects of my case. By the time I was feeling better, the 1-year statute of limitations was past, and now I don't know if I regret it or not. At the time, I did regret not having filed the suit, but now, after hearing how much of yourself you have poured into this suit and to have it come to naught, I'm not sure. I still feel that justice has not been served, in either your case or mine.

My advice to others: If you are not certain about whether or not you want to pursue a case, keep your options open by filing before the end of the limitation period (one year, in my case) so that you have the option of pursuing it or not. You don't have to complete the case if you don't want to do it.

Liz.....I know that you must be exhausted! and very, very frustrated. I wouldn't presume to know whether you should gather more energy for more appeals, or drop it, knowing that you have done the maximum for Robin. No matter what you decide to do, I hope that you will take some time for YOURSELF....away from all of this....to get restored and refreshed.

You have done a great deal for each of us, by bringing the subject of inadequate professionals into the bright light of day, even if you are on the other side of the ocean. That's not a big deal these days!

XO--Colleen

Consider this --- If the dentist doesn't change his ways and someone else complains, there IS a pattern --- If he does change his ways then you have helped his future patients.

Liz,
You remind me of those big child size blow-up dolls we had as kids. They were weighted at the bottom so that as much as you tried to knock them over they popped back up. Stay grounded and keep up the good work.
You really deserve a nice vacation. Those grandkids are the best reward in the world.

Liz,

Take a step back and give yourself a break. If you feel like pursuing it later go for it. Many things don't come easy or the way we want them to but after a break maybe the fire will return. If you feel down deep that this is wrong (and we all know it's morally incorrect) then I wouldn't give up trying to "educate" your legislative body. Remember that whatever you do can't possibly make the standards less restrictive and could only make them more punitive.

I've read the responses, and everyone has had something valuable to say, but only you can tell how you will process this latest insult. It reopened your wounds; it's no wonder you have anger and bitterness and that you feel hollowed out. In time, perhaps, you can move on, but not yet. I think we all understand that.

Just remember, there are wonderful and caring people here, and I hope you trust that they will help lighten your load.

Godspeed,
Marlene

Marginal mandibulectomy 6/17/08 resulted in DX of Stage I SCC - gingiva (3 mm) right mandible, buccal side. Clear margins. Occasional social drinker. Smoked last cigarette in 1979. Clear pet: 12/08; 7/20/09. Yay!

Liz,
Take heart in the fact that you got a lot of very bad publicity for this jerk and have probably put a sizable dent in his earnings. You also got out the word about oral cancer and the problems with misdiagnosis and are continuing to do so. While the government is going by the letter of the law, you may have lost the battle but I think you won the war. It's time to get on with your life and try to recover from the grief and anger you are feeling. I'm am so happy to hear you will have 5 weeks in Dubai. Go enjoy yourself, Robin would want you to.

Take care,
Eileen
