Does it make sense to do the oral test, or to test the tumor removed during surgery for HPV? In other words, is it possible that the pap smear would be negative, yet the HPV virus could still be found in the mouth or tissues of the mouth? I've known several people in my life that have had an HPV+ diagnosis during routine testing, and eventually, they cleared the virus and do not test positive. There is some debate about weather the immune system clears it for good, or not, but there's enough anecdotal evidence to suggest that the virus lies dormant. It would be best to get the tumor tested.

Whether or not it's present doesn't mean it will cause cancer either. There is no Oral test for HPV that I am aware of. The actual cancer cells from a biopsy must be sent to one of the few certified HPV testing labs like Johns Hopkins.

Yes you could develop a positive area remote from other common areas to have HPV. There is only one FDA approved test by Digene for HPV, and right now it is only applicable to the cervix. That is collected by brush cytology. In the mouth you would have to look at the removed tissue itself.
