#78498     08-10-2008 11:19 AM      |       Joined:  Feb 2007  Posts: 1,940    "OCF across the pond" Patient Advocate (1000+ posts)   |      OP      "OCF across the pond" Patient Advocate (1000+ posts)    Joined:  Feb 2007  Posts: 1,940  |    I spend many hours wondering how i can be proactive in the fight against Oral Cancer,and today i made my first positive step.In the UK One week in November is designated Mouth Cancer Awareness Week,and today i contacted my local radio station whom i am in regular contact with through my job at the hospice.I have given them a brief outline about the disease and the importance of early diagnosis,oral screening and educated dentists.I am asking for a slot on the radio to bang home this message and urge people to make sure they get an oral Cancer screening test at every regular dental check up.i have also asked them to bullet punch the warning signs throughout the week.
  Heres hoping they take me up on this.

  Husband Robin aged 44 years Dx 8th Dec 2006 poorly differentiated SCC tongue with met to neck T1N2cM0 Surgery and Radiation.Finished TX April 2007 Recurrence June/07 died July 29th/07.

  Retired Dentist, 59 years old at diagnosis.  SCC of the left lateral border of the tongue (Stage I). Partial glossectomy and 30 nodes removed, 4/6/05.  Nodes all clear. No chemo no radiation 18 year survivor.

  Age 58 at Dx, HPV16+ SCC, Stage IV BOT+2 nodes, non smoker, casual drinker, exercise nut, Cisplatin x 3 & concurrent IMRT x 35,(70 Gy), no surgery, no Peg, Tx at Moffitt over Aug 06. Jun 07, back to riding my bike 100 miles a wk. Now doing 12 Spin classes and 60 outdoor miles per wk. Nov 13 completed Hilly Century ride for Cancer, 104 miles, 1st Place in my age group. Apr 2014 & 15, Spun for 9 straight hrs to raise $$ for YMCA's Livestrong Program. Certified Spin Instructor Jun 2014.

LOL        
     Since posting this. UPMC, Pittsburgh, Oct 2011 until Jan.  I averaged  about 2 to 3 surgeries a week there.  w  Can't have jaw made as bone is deteroriating steaily that is left in jaw. Mersa is to blame. Feeding tube .  Had trach for 4mos. Got it out April. --- Passed away 5/14/14, will be greatly missed by everyone here

  Don't worry..you will do fine.
  I remember my first TV interview and how nervous I was.  It got much easier for the second one.  Just answer the questions, you know all the facts.

  Thanks for spreading the news.  Dont worry about messing up on your interview.  You know the topic very well and are a very intelligent person.  Ive been on TV a couple times and thought I did terrible.  They edited it and I came across as sounding pretty good.
