Joined: Jan 2007 Posts: 735 | I am over a year out from my surgery and I had a ALL clear PET scan a few weeks ago !! WOHOOOOO..
However , I am having some weird things going on and I am wondering if anyone else has experienced these things .
It is almost as though I have some drainage or somthing coming from my scar. Does anyone or has anyone else had that problem ?
I have to go to Dr to have it checked , but was curious if anyone else has experienced it .

Do you have drainage from your neck dissection scar or the scar inside your mouth? I have had irritation of the skin around my neck scar (I think from radiation), but nothing like drainage.

Joined: Jun 2007 Posts: 5,260 | My scar doesn't hurt but it sure does in my throat where the dissection was. I had drainage for a awhile, then it quit and has been fine since. It used to make a mess out of my bed and pillow LOL.. I just turned the pillow over to the clean side.. Just Kidding here ladies. Gotta make fun of myself
Since posting this. UPMC, Pittsburgh, Oct 2011 until Jan. I averaged about 2 to 3 surgeries a week there. w Can't have jaw made as bone is deteroriating steaily that is left in jaw. Mersa is to blame. Feeding tube . Had trach for 4mos. Got it out April.

Joined: Jan 2007 Posts: 735 | The actual scar on my neck and swollen under my neck ..lymphatic fluid and a swollen lump above where drainage is . Yet PET just came back clear.

Joined: Mar 2002 Posts: 4,918 Likes: 66 | There is no reason for an accumulation of lymphatic fluid to show up on a PET scan. PETs measure high metabolic activity represented by rapid sugar burning. This is not happening in you obviously.

Joined: Feb 2005 Posts: 2,019 | Sharlee, Yes, that sounds like just a buildup of lymphatic fluid that might be draining a little. If it gets worse, especially the drainage, I'd go see your doctor. You might also see if you can find a massage therapist who knows how to do lymphatic drainage massage (make sure you get one with training in specificzlly that) and that might help as well.

Congratulations on your one year milestone.
If I were you, I would certainly get that drainage checked. How about contacteing the surgeon that did the surgery?

Retired Dentist, 59 years old at diagnosis. SCC of the left lateral border of the tongue (Stage I). Partial glossectomy and 30 nodes removed, 4/6/05. Nodes all clear. No chemo no radiation 18 year survivor.
