Hi All
I just finished my first round of chemo consisting of: Cisplatinum, Taxol, and five days of 5-FU in the hospital. Will start another one 5-23 08 an one most likely one 3 weeks after that also, then six.to nine weeks radidion. No surgery maybe
I left the hospital on Thursday afternoon. Since then my month and throat have been getting worse. My lips are blistered and my throat is swollen and sore. In the morning I am able to get up and take some oxycontin with an ativan with a cup of tea and I feel almost instantly better but by night time it turns to misery because my lips start to bubble and swallowing wants to stops except for small amounts of water. During the day I force myself to swallow small amounts of food to keep my nutrition up even though it is very painful. Today I go to the doctors to get my blood count, should I check in to a stronger pain management program for evening or is there a more natural way of management?
Any suggestions are welcome as in a lip ointment?

Thanks
Jeff and Rae Daneke

I don't think that there is any "natural" form of pain management. Mouth sores are to be expected with the chemo regimen that you are on. Oxycontin is pretty strong stuff but, IMO Duragesic (Fentanyl) patches work better. For one thing, they last 72 hours and give a constant pain management. You will get other narcotics for breakthrough pain, such as Morphine.

Ice chips should give you some relief as well.

Don't use lip balms that are petroleum based. I used Epicren Lip Balm and had good success with that. See:

http://www.amazon.com/Epicuren-Enzy...amp;s=hpc&qid=1210622884&sr=8-27

It's available through Amazon - purchase it through the OCF Amazon link and a small percentage goes back to support OCF.

I used Aquaphor, which is a healing ointment and I was cleared up in 2 weeks. I put it on several times a day and it worked just like the Dr said it would.

Since posting this. UPMC, Pittsburgh, Oct 2011 until Jan. I averaged about 2 to 3 surgeries a week there. w Can't have jaw made as bone is deteroriating steaily that is left in jaw. Mersa is to blame. Feeding tube . Had trach for 4mos. Got it out April.

My husband had pretty much the same treatment and started getting mouth sores after the first round of induction chemo (cisplatin, taxotere, and 5fu). He had oxycodone for pain at first but pretty quickly began the fentanyl patches Gary mentioned above and they worked well (then could use the oxycodone for break through pain). He began rinsing his mouth with baking soda and salt mixture multiple times a day and tried other mouth rinses as well. His second round of the three chemo drugs actually was easier than the first round because he began all of the rinses and fentanyl.

Post Tx I also used Aguaphor and it worked great. In fact I still have the tube and use it occasionally.
