My Dad had scc on his inner cheek and went thought surgery to remove it and they found some spots in his lymph nodes so suggested 25-30 rads and two sessions of chemo. After the chemo, the rads became alot more intense and he had severe mucostitis. His platelet counts dropped to 40,000 so he was admitted to the hospital and has had two blood transfusions and platelet transfusions. The doctors have said this is a normal side effect of chemo but are surprised because there were only 2 sessions of chemo and they were low doses as well. I am worried that it may be something else. I don't know where to look and I don't know how many more transfusions he will have before he can be stable...or will he ever be? How long do the effects of chemo last?
Dad had scc inner cheek, mod rad diss, 24 rad, 2 chemos, 2 blood and platelet transfusions...praying that CT scan comes clear..

The changes were small but that is to be expected. I can tell you that he felt physically better 25 hours after a transfusion. My husbands mucosititis was severe so things should get better but it takes time. Deep breathe and before you know it these concerns will get better. My husband is suffering from neropathy and that can be permanent.
Just read about side effects till you are blue in the face and keep repeating them to the doctors.
I will be thinking of you Dad!! Cindy | | | | Joined: Feb 2008 Posts: 14 Member | OP Member Joined: Feb 2008 Posts: 14 | Thanks Cindy,

The doctors said they wouldn't occur until the 3rd or 4th treatments. I think that everyone is so different. I go on the actual website for the drug and find more helpful info there. Sue

My husband had 3 mega does of Cisplatin with 35 rads. then they told him to do more and he started Cisplatin and 5FU that is the last time he had chemo 3/10/08. The doctors wont let him do those 2 chemos again but hav suggested new ones....once he recovers from the treatment side effects.
I hope things are going ok with you!! Cindy | | |
