Age 58 at Dx, HPV16+ SCC, Stage IV BOT+2 nodes, non smoker, casual drinker, exercise nut, Cisplatin x 3 & concurrent IMRT x 35,(70 Gy), no surgery, no Peg, Tx at Moffitt over Aug 06. Jun 07, back to riding my bike 100 miles a wk. Now doing 12 Spin classes and 60 outdoor miles per wk. Nov 13 completed Hilly Century ride for Cancer, 104 miles, 1st Place in my age group. Apr 2014 & 15, Spun for 9 straight hrs to raise $$ for YMCA's Livestrong Program. Certified Spin Instructor Jun 2014.

Joined: Jun 2007 Posts: 5,260 | I'm thinking the Dr told me about a gland right below my ear in my jaw and didn't mean my neck. My daughter checked it out ant told me, but LOL, I forget the name of the gland. Sure sounds like cartoid tho. I can tell you one thing, if my right ear doesn't stop hurting more everyday, I'm gonna have to mix up some mortar and pour it in. My lip has quit hurting , but still waiting for my tongue to throw in the towel and quit hurting.
Since posting this. UPMC, Pittsburgh, Oct 2011 until Jan. I averaged about 2 to 3 surgeries a week there. w Can't have jaw made as bone is deteroriating steaily that is left in jaw. Mersa is to blame. Feeding tube . Had trach for 4mos. Got it out April.

Joined: Mar 2002 Posts: 4,918 Likes: 65 | liz has this one nailed.... parotid gland - one on each side, upper cheek right across from the bottom of most people's ear, the largest of the salivary glands, and something you can externally biopsy with a needle, though it is so big someone would have to have a good idea (from a scan) where they thought they were going to do a fine needle biopsy. And it sounds like an artery, the carotid in your neck. Involvement of the parotid often manifests itself as referred ear pain.

Joined: Feb 2008 Posts: 341 | Jim that is where Dan had his FNA and like Brian said it's so big so it's tough. After that first one on the initial office visit they sent him for the CT then did a second and then sent him for the third with ultrasound. All that was to help define the area more clearly. No pain though - just an irritant according to Dan, but he did say try not to look at the needle :-)

Rob's big secondary tumour was in his parotid gland.They are the ones you get mumps in,(parotitis)and when they are swollen you look like a hamster with a full pouch!!!.The very first procedure he ever had done was a fine needle aspiration and it didnt hurt him at all ,but they did take enough fluid out for a diagnosis and to relive the pressure and reduce the swelling considerably.It came back of course but he was much more comfortable for quite a few days.

I believe as liz stated; that the gland would be the parotid. It sits right around the ear and extends below it and into the cheek. It is the biggest supplier of saliva. If it is inflammed, swollen or funtioning improperly it can put pressure on the vascular bundle, (artery, vein and nerve), that run around, under and sometimes through its expanse. Your symptoms would lead me to believe that it is the facial and/or maxillary artery; not carotid artery that is being referred to. The pain would most likely be caused by pressure or impairment on the facial nerve in this bundle not the artery itself. I hope this is useful.

I know David has cautioned already about Carnation VHC causing dehydration but I wanted to bring it up again since some of us are using it on a daily basis. I use about 5 cans a day and in the beginning I didn't know about the dehydration factor. Boy did I find out the tough way. With the flu and being dehydrated already from the VHC, my skin went crazy. I could NOT stop itching, I dug myself raw in at least 20 places all over my body. It's just now starting to heal and I make sure to put a full 16 oz of water in with each can AND an extra 8 oz twice a day. It really has made a difference. Sorry you're losing weight. This VHC has helped me gain 18 pounds since my Oct. surgery. I have to go buy new pants now and I'm excited about it!

SCC Left Mandible. Jaw replaced with bone from leg. Neck disection, 37 radiation treatments. Recurrence 8-28-07, stage 2, tongue. One third of tongue removed 10-4-07. 5-23-08 chemo started for tumor behind swallowing passage, Our good friend and much loved OCF member Minnie has been lost to the disease (RIP 10-29-08). We will all miss her greatly.

Believe me, on top of everything else going wrong with you, you don't want to fight constipation as well.
