I guess this is what others have referred as "turkey neck" or lymphedema. Last week I flew (with some turbulence) and the day after the swelling increased a lot! I have seen references linking flying and lymphedema, but have not seen any posting in the forum on this respect. I was planning to fly next week to see my family during Christmas and I was wondering if anybody has experience with any compression garments for the neck. Any recommendations? Should I not fly at all? | | |

I hope I can help here. Flying makes everyone swell to a point. It is cause by the pressurization not turbulence. Be sure to cut salt intake down and drink lots of fluids before flight.
My only thought is try to stoke your throat area in a down ward stroke. This might help to prevent the large sack like swelling or liquid build up.
Let me know if this was helpful or not.. Take care, Diane

After a few flights and the use of the mask for several hours a day, I can say it really helps to lower the lymphedema. Still there is some swelling in the morning, but it is noticeable less. Lauderdale and back. I noticed some worsening of lymphedema for a day after flights each way, and some increased pain in my neck, due to pressure on nerves. After a day or so, back to "normal", which for me is still a Thanksgiving reminder, but getting slowly better. ;-) Jeff SCC Right BOT Dx 3/28/2007 T2N2a M0G1,Stage IVa Bilateral Neck Dissection 4/11/2007 39 x IMRT, 8 x Cisplatin Ended 7/11/07 Complete response to treatment so far!!
