Hi y'all,

I finished chemo/rad 3 weeks ago. Last night, I was feeling around. The large tumor seems to be gones, and everything else is OK. However, I did feel what I think is an enlarged gland under my jawbone down near my ear.

So now, I'm playing the "what if" game. Here are my questions:

1. Do these glands ever swell because of the radiation?

2. What will happen if the chemo/radiation didn't work?

3. Is it possible that the radiation is still working and this might still go away?

Nobody here can make a diagnosis. What do your doctors say?

I can't get in to see them until next week. I'm just ruminating until then.

You should be having regular exams that include palpation and visual. Why were they not doing this during your treatment? How did they miss an enlarged gland? I'd get on them bigtime. 'Next week' is unacceptable.

The salivary glands can swell during radiation, this can start about the fourth week as the cumulative dose approaches (or exceeds) that which causes tissue damage in the gland. My husband's right parotid gland swelled at about this time -- it was visually noticable if you looked hard -- and it was also somewhat tender. His RO said this was common. The swelling went down as radiation continued.

However what others have posted is correct, you need to have your doctor look at this and determine what is going on.
