Joined: Feb 2004 Posts: 56 | About 5 days ago, my father began having hiccups. They come and go off and on all day long. He is on a feeding tube, which eliminates a few remedies. I began to look in my home remedies book regarding hiccup cures. It stated that hiccups are common in certain types of cancer. Has anyone heard of this? Also, any remedies you can suggest.

I also suffered hiccups for at least a month during radiation. I mentioned it, and was told that it was not uncommon, there really wasn't a lot they could do for them anyway, and they would eventually stop.
They did stop on their own, thankfully

Joined: Jul 2006 Posts: 47 | Vickie, Tom had terrible hiccups too. They kept him awake for nearly 48 hours, at which point I called the MO. We had been told that hiccups were a side effect of chemo (can't remember if it was from the Erbitux or Cisplatin). The MO prescribed Thorazine and that cured them. It wasn't immediate relief; it took a bit (like a couple of hours) but it worked. Like you, I went online to research home remedies. Did you find the homemade web sites that list hundreds of "cures" submitted by readers? If you read some of them too your dad, maybe you'll get him laughing so hard it will cure his hiccups! Joyce

Joined: Nov 2002 Posts: 3,552 | I had chronic (AKA "Severe") hiccups for a while and it was tough to get them under control - it just added to the misery. I think I just took my own cocktail of Ativan, Zanax and Compazine and it sort of worked. Let the doc know - chronic hiccups are not a good thing. I also tried a teaspoon of sugar and that kind of worked. What didn't work was holding my breath or the paper bag thing - maybe for regular, garden variety hiccups but not this kind.
Thorazine (AKA chloropromazine) wow - that's some potent stuff - same stuff that nurse Ratchet was dispensing to everyone in the "Cuckoo's Nest". You have to play "Charmaine" by Montovani for the maximum effect.
My reference book says Thorazine isn't always effective and there can be some adverse side effects with other drugs. Make sure that you speak with the pharmacist.

Joined: Feb 2005 Posts: 2,019 | Teaspoon of sugar always worked for me back when I could swallow right! Like Gary, I'm kind of surprised they'd give Thorazine because it is SO powerful. I had one bad case since I can no longer swallow right and Ativan alone worked for a cure.

TOLD ME TO DRINK WATER AND KEEP THE THROAT
MOIST. IT ONLY LASTED A DAY THANK GOODNESS
EVER SINCE THEN I DRINK PLENTY OF WATER.

Joined: Feb 2004 Posts: 56 | Thanks for all your help. We do have generic ativan (lorazapam) I think from his previous panic attacks. Hopefully, I'll remember to try that if they start up again. He had them on and off for more than a week. Never happened before. As for the sugar/water cure, can't happen, nothing by mouth, only thru the tube. We see the Dr again on Wed, will see what he recommends. When I called prev for something, He wanted to see him. Sometimes, I feel they only want the money from the visit, forgetting about the hypacratic (sp?) oath. Thanks again for all your help.
