Joined: Feb 2004 Posts: 56 | Has anyone heard about or had experience with extending COBRA? Last night a friend called me and said she had talked to her brother-in-law, who is an insurance guy. He sells mostly to businesses. Anyway, I had previously told her that my fathers COBRA option runs out in May of 2005. She said he told her, that if my father was qualified as disabled by Social Security, he could extend COBRA benefits for another 11 months.

Joined: Nov 2002 Posts: 3,552 | I believe that's true. I think you can get 36 months on COBRA if you are disabled. It's 18 months otherwise. But if you are on SSDI for 2 years you are eligible for Medicare.

Joined: Oct 2003 Posts: 89 | I've wondered about what is considered a "disability" in regards to speech/oral communication.
Would love to hear from others regarding this. (I've lost 1/2 my tongue)
History of leukoplakia <2001-2004. SCC lateral tongue 9/03; left radical neck dissection & hemiglosectomy 10/03, T2-3,N0M0; 28 IMRT radiation completed 12/03. 30 HBO dives Oct-Nov 04 for infections and bone necrosis -mandible.

Joined: Nov 2002 Posts: 3,552 | Disabled means unable to work. Deaf people can't talk orally (as a rule) although I have have met a few who can, and they aren't considered disabled.
