Children/people who have cleft palate defects wear them as well as people who have had the palate removed during surgery. After a maxillectomy, when part or all of the palate is removed, a removable obturator is fabricated. It may extend into the soft palate area, and may also have a metal framework besides the plastic palatal portion which aids in attaching it to any remaining natural teeth for support. For completely edentulous patients a full upper denture is fabricated that has the obturator on the tissue side of the denture. Next week we should have up another section in the dental portion of the web site up and visible which is on oral reconstruction. Pictures of obtuators will appear there.
