There was much of the information that came from other sources I was unfamiliar with, and the producer did not contact some of the resources that I wanted her to, such as Dr. Gillison. I essentially had a list of questions they assembled, and I went into a studio and answered them, I then sent the Beta SP tape to FOX who controlled final content and editing. I will be as curious as any to see if they got the story right.
You work on producers and reporters to do a story. You make so many calls and pitches, you forget how many. If you are lucky one of them gets hooked on some aspect of it that resonates with them. They agree to do a small piece. You give them backgrounder, contacts, and an interview (which they set the agenda for.)
Then they start thinking about things other than facts, other than what the story means to the world. What will sell, bring viewer ratings, and so much more. The best you can hope for is that in the end they will stay true to the cause and why the story needs to be told in the first place. You hope that the way they cut it does not put words in your mouth, or make you looked biased or stupid. Believe me, 40 minutes of interview edited to 5, can tell any story they want to. If your're lucky, something meaningful hits the streets. Whomever see it first please let me know.....

I wish that it had been so much more. But its another piece out there, and they did get at least one sentence from OCF board member Dr. Ross Kerr at NYU.

Having read Dr. Sturgis's (MDACC) paper which this is aparently based on, I disagree with him on several points. Also the article that they show about trends in the video, is not new, it is actually over 18 months old.

The following from the article doesn't seem like an accurate figure and statement from what I've read.
"Oral cancer is on the decline in America, except in men over the age of 45."
Is it????

The incidence rate is up 11% this year alone. We have some new data that is coming out in the next 5 months that is written and just waiting for publication, and because of that I can't detail it here until published. But the incidence rates are alaming, and particularly in HPV positive disease. Reporters don't always get it right. The truth is always in the evidence based peer reviewed publications. Quotes from doctors interviewed frequently by the general media too often reflect their lack of currency on the research, and instead represent their limited personal clinical experience. This may be very different than what is happening in other institutions for a ton of reasons.
