Minnie, the reconstructive surgeon told us that using the bone from the hip[in his experience] causes a lot of problems, is hard to shape and fit and he was having more success with titanium. This guy was voted[by whom I don't know]one of the Best Doctors in America according to a plaque in his waiting room. They wanted to use a graft from the left arm, but John's circulation was so bad in that arm they have elected not to . I am taking your post with me to the hospital so that I can question the position they keep John's head in during his "sleep state" Thank you. Damn, this is scary stuff I think I will have access to a computer while we are there and I will be updating and probably asking alot of questions. Thank you all for being here. Amy

The Docs won't wake him up until sometime Saturday, so maybe he'll only have 2 days of not being able to write. I've just spent the last 1 1\2 hrs. reading past posts here after searching "titaniun jaws". Still feel very uneducated about them, which means I can't talk to the reconstructive surgeon very intelligently. So anyone out there who can give me questions to ask? Amy

It's the "treatment of choice" when jawbone is removed. Ask them about it, see what they say. Minnie
SCC Left Mandible. Jaw replaced with bone from leg. Neck disection, 37 radiation treatments. Recurrence 8-28-07, stage 2, tongue. One third of tongue removed 10-4-07. 5-23-08 chemo started for tumor behind swallowing passage, Our good friend and much loved OCF member Minnie has been lost to the disease (RIP 10-29-08). We will all miss her greatly.

That might make that kind of bone transplant much harder than when it occurs before raidation.

They have boosted the Prednisone some to help with the joint problems that he has had for some time. I spent several hrs. tody trying to find Titaniun replacements for jaw bone, but did not get very far. Guess I'm still looking in the wrong places. In fact I'm gonna post to that issue in General topics. Amy
