My mum knows a man who's having radiation to half of his face after cancer being removed and he's been taking double doses of Co enzyme Q10 and grape seed extract. He says he has very little bad side effects. Apparently it really helps your immune system.
I'm planning on dosing up my partner before he starts next week and continuing throughout.

Partner diagnosed with low grade mucoepidermoid carcinoma of sublingual gland, 2nd opinion graded intermediate grade, surgery to remove, lymph nodes removed one side, nodes all clear. Treatment - radiation.

Kristie, I would ask your RO about that before doing it. The fear is that antioxidants which protect normal tissue against radiation may also make the rad. less effective against the cancer cells. The general advice I got was no antioxidants during treatment. Bottom line is no one knows how they work and if they inhibit the effectiveness of the rad.

Hi Lisa.
My husband had problems with his rad by day three and his oncologist said he was just very unfortunate to be suffering so quickly.I guess it really is the luck of the draw. Also the dosage may be pertinent ,Rob recieved high dosage to both sides of his mouth and neck as well as the floor of his mouth and his throat.

Hi Nelie
You said yourself that antioxidants protect NORMAL tissue against radiation.
So why wouldn't people take antioxidants if it helps protect the normal tissue?
Antioxidants don't promote cancer cells to grow.

NO antioxdants during radiation tratment, also not for a few weeks following it. Check with an RO.

Also read:
http://www.cancer.gov/newscenter/pressreleases/antioxidants

When you radiate with x rays you damage the cells DNA by generating free radicals (mostly from water which then damages the DNA. Antioxidants protect cells (normal and cancer cells) from damage by mopping up free radicals. So you may end up protecting the cancer cells, not a good idea.
The point is you WANT to damage the DNA, because normal cells are more efficient at repair while cancer cells are generally not.
