The second lung ct scan showed many small nodules in both lungs. I had a blood test that was to show if there was any indication of breast cancer, but it showed none. The only way to tell for certain which cancer it is, is by biopsy; hence surgery next Tuesday. Most likely it will prove to be the adenoid cystic carcinoma that has metastasized from the salivary gland.
A visit with the oncologist was somewhat reassuring. He said this cancer frequently is slow growing. He will order scans as needed to keep an eye on its progress. There is no chemo to cure this rare type of cancer, but he said as it grows larger there is chemo that can be tried in an attempt to slow it down.
This was somewhat reassuring in that at least I will have some time in which to do the many things I must following the recent demise of my spouse. I have put dealing with death certificates, wills and accounting on the back burner for now. It is all just too much to face.
It was exactly one year ago that the original diagnosis was made. It has been an extraordinary year of challenges.
Stage III Adenoid Cystic Carcinoma, submandibular salivary gland. Diagnosed 10/02. Neutron radiation completed 12/24/02. Stage III breast cancer 3/03. Mastectomy, 4/03. ACC Mets to lungs 9/03.
