Joined: May 2004 Posts: 137 | We hear so many sad things on here I thought if I might share a story with you. I live in Las Vegas and out here we have year around schools, my first born Grandson just started the 1st Grade. His teacher asked the students to each tell the class a story about a family member. It could be Mommy, Daddy, Sister or Brother etc. Well my little 6 year old Grandson told a story about me. It over welmed the teacher so that she called my daughter and told her about it. He told the class that he had the best Grandma and Papa in the whole world. But Grandma is very sick with a big bug called CANCER. She can't talk to me right now but she clapps her hands when I do something that is funny. I go over and take care of my Grandma, I help her alot and she makes me cookies. I wish her doctor could take the big bug away and let my Grandma come back. He then told that the next time he and his Moma go to the store he was going to buy some bug spray, for Grandma....How sweet is that,,,Miss Vicki---And you ask why I chose the surgery??? | | |

Aren't Grandchildren something? They keep you going and make you want to keep going. My youngest Granddaughter who is 7 told everyone she saw in stores, everywhere, Grandma was fighting cancer. My prayers are with you Miss Vicki and your family.

What a great story! Fighting the beast so we can make more memories for our families is the best reward!! The only good thing that comes with this disease is that it gives you at the very least some time to get your priorities in order. And hugs from grandkids are the greatest!!! Take time to make good memories, take lots of pictures and enjoy every day of your life. It is worth the fight!! Hope to meet in September! - Kris

Diagnosed May 2002 with Stage IV tongue cancer, two lymph nodes positive. Surgery to remove 1/2 tongue, neck dissection, 35 radiation treatments. 11/2007, diagnosed with cancer of soft palate, surgery 12/14/07, jaw split. 3/24/10, cancer on tongue behind flap, need petscan, surgery scheduled 4/16/10

Grandchildren are a blessing. My youngest grandchild, youngest of 5, saw me taking my ensure meal through my Peg tube recently. Her mother explained, "That's the way Poppa eats his meals". That did not satisfy her curiosity, she came to me and basically asked me why I had to eat that way. I didn't know what to say knowing at age 3 she knew nothing about cancer, radiation side effects, etc. So I just told her that Poppa was sick in his throat and could not swallow, which seemed to satisfy her. She now reminds her mother to call me daily so she can ask me about my throat.

I do go into another room when I fed, but they are nosy as you well know, he seen me ran back into the living room at the top of his little voice screaming Grandma has a water hose stuck in her. LOL. I laughed so hard at that.. He cannot read yet, well he can his name, that is about it. Well I cannot talk, so when I point to him to be nice, which he knows what I am doing, because he is doing somthing that he shouldn't be doing. He will put his hand up to his ear and say Grandma I can understand you, write it down for me. Like he could read it. We all just crack up on that one. I love it tho. He understands me when he wants to tho..They are precious and they are some of the reasons I live for. The four of them make it all worth it. Always Vicki Lynn,. | | |

Joined: Aug 2003 Posts: 1,627 | I used a syringe to do my tube feedings, not a bag. My five year old grandaughter, Shelby, became quite proficient at handling it for me. Many times when I would be on this very board, typing away or reading words of comfort, she would be standing beside me, doing my tube feeding. She found it fascinating. The fact that she loved to tell anyone that would listen,even strangers, about the tube in my stomach was a little unnerving at times but I just let her ramble on!
SCC Left Mandible. Jaw replaced with bone from leg. Neck disection, 37 radiation treatments. Recurrence 8-28-07, stage 2, tongue. One third of tongue removed 10-4-07. 5-23-08 chemo started for tumor behind swallowing passage, Our good friend and much loved OCF member Minnie has been lost to the disease (RIP 10-29-08). We will all miss her greatly.

From just the little bit I have learned of you from this board, I know your grandson is so special because of you! Thank you so much for the great story and may you have many, many more every day.
Thank you everyone for the great stories. From the time I got the big diagnosis I have remembered so many times when my son was about 5 and after a really good weekend with my father, my son took my hand and said you sure will be a good grandpa, just like your daddy. I have prayed a few times now for God to grant me that opportunity.
