Hello: My name is Tom. I was diagnosed with squamous cell carcinoma at the base of my tongue 3-2020 and treated at UCLA on a clinical trial, and received a clear scan 10-2020. During 3 month follow-ups was advised to have a polyp and other tissue removed from throat, even though it appeared to be benign. 3-2022 had the tissue removed from throat, only to find cancer cells in larynx. Began standard of care (cisplatin x 7 & IMRT radiation x 33) on 3-15-22 so currently about at half way point. Would appreciate any feedback / experience from others who have gone down a similar path that may prove helpful. In particular, I am curious about long-term side effects based on this treatment plan and/or any thoughts about how to best navigate. I am seeing a speech therapist and a dietician as part of the protocol. Thanks in advance for assistance.

Hello Fellow Tom: It appears that you have started with early detection and treatment. That's the way to keep ahead of the problem. Over the years I've had several surgeries and radiation. While going through these things, they are not fun! That said, I started these activities in 2003 and all these years later I'm continuing to enjoy an active life. I don't know if I can tell you anyting more about what to expect or how to navigate other than "Carpe diem". Tom C

Thanks for your reply Tom C: Yes, my diagnosis has been stage 2, early, which I am very thankful! So glad to hear you are able to continue to be active. I had trans oral surgery which was not fun for sure. Now it is dealing with the last 3 weeks of chemo and radiation and the recovery period. Tom R
