Hi, my name is Jacs and my brother had a 70% glossectomy 5 days ago for tongue cancer so I am a bit new to this. He is doing ever so well but is absolutely terrified to lie down for fear of choking. He has a LOT of saliva just now. I cannot imagine how this must feel but he is exhausted as he can’t sleep. Is there any advice please? Much appreciated in advance. Thank you

Hi Jacs. I don't know if this would help but I ordered one of those big foam wedge pillows for my husband so he could elevate his head while he slept. I hope your brother improves quickly!

Hi Jacs,

You’ve received helpful advice on a wedge pillow. I have an electric bed, so that helps to incline, but even with that I slept in the recliner for several months after one surgery. Other times I brushed my mouth (follow dr suggestions), and had extra cups, towel, bedside for mucus, so I wouldn’t have to get up at night.

When I was is the hospital after my first treatment, I had much mucus, which was taken out by a suction machine, I forget the name now, but I have heard of others with Home models.

Good luck

Hi Jacs, Beside the pillow and other suggestions my doctor prescribed a mucus thinner and a suction machine to help remove it. Praying for you and your brother. Bryan

15 year survivor of tonsil cancer. In 2002 I was diagnosed with Stage III squamous cell carcinoma. I had a left neck dissection, teeth removed, and 38 radiation treatments. In 2015 I received a feeding tube and in 2016 a trach, both due to radiation side effects. But I'm happy to say that life has been good to me!!
