Joined: Jul 2003 Posts: 235 | My mom's fight with this horrific disease ended today. If there's any good that came out of this 12.5 year journey, it's the people I've met; complete strangers who came to my aid and embraced me with their compassion, knowledge and kindness. I was a scared sh*tless caregiver drowning in waves of emotion and challenge, but people on this forum and at the many hospitals I contacted and visited took me under their wing and pulled me through three bouts of my mom's oral cancer. Names like Danny Bogan, Uptown, Joanna, Frank Packer Sherman, Gary and, of course, Brian will serve as a reminder of the goodness in people. I deeply appreciate the community this forum provided me with.

Mom's caregvr. DDS failed to dx 01/03. Dx Stg IV SCC 05/03. Induct. chemo, IMRT, 5FU, H, Iressa, Neck disect, radiation. Dad's caregvr. Dx 01/04 Ext. Stg SCLC. Mets to liver/bone 08/04. Died 11/12/04. Mom tongue CA dx 06/13, hemiglossectomy (80% removed) 08/13. Clean margins and nodes, but PNI. 6/15/15: Tongue CA at base of remnant tongue. Declined further tx; hospice.
Died 10/13/15. What a long and difficult journey.

I'm very sorry to hear about your mother. She was diagnosed a few years before me so I don't recall reading any of your posts on the forum.
Yes, this is a horrific disease, but as you said I've also meet a lot of wonderful people, complete strangers, that became like family to me and so many others.
Your mother and father raised a good son and you were there when they needed you. My sincere sympathy to you and your family.

Bob age 57, non smoker,non drinker, ended treatment on 11 Nov 2007 and started back to work on 29 Nov 2007. Veterans Day 2012 the Battle was lowered, folded, Taps was played and the Flag buried as I am know a 5 year survivor. Semper-FI !!!

We shall add your mother to a list of fine folks that have succumbed to this disease and/or treatment.

37 y/o fem at Dx (23 wks preg @ dx on 3/16/11)
SCC L oral tongue (no risk factors)
L partial gloss/MND 3/28/11 @ 25 wks preg
T1-2N0M0; no rads/chemo
Tonsillectomy on 8/6/12 +SCC L tonsil T2-3N1M0 (HPV-)
Treated with 35 rads/7 carbo & taxol (Rx ended 10/31/12), but many hospitalizations d/t complications from rx.
Various scans since rx ended are NED!
Part of genetic study for rare cancers @ MGH.
44 years old now...I wasn't sure I would make it! Hoping for 40 more!
