Hi I don't know if anyone has had this or heard of this, a year after radiation I noticed that my tongue is burning and very painful and a sore like appeared on my tongue, looking smooth like a layer came off. Well last year it got so bad they injected my tongue with steroids. They took quite a few biopsies on the spot and not cancer, but the sore and painful tongue will not go away. The pathologist said something about post radiation sores. Anyone know about this, thanks, Michele

That's very normal. Maybe your immune system is depress and circulation to the area compromised from the radiation. Do a bit of physio, (neck, jaw and mouth) keep the area very clean, rinse and brush after each meal. see if that works. Hugs.

It could be something like Burning Tongue/Mouth Syndrome, BTS, which can be caused by a number of things like radiation, chemo, medications, vitamin defeciency, medical conditions, dry mouth, etc. or be a number of other oral conditions, even thrush. Seeing about blood work, having an oral culture done may be helpful too.

Good luck Michelle.

Michelle - my suggestion would be that the do an excision all biopsy under sedation. For my 2nd dx I had two or more "all clear" biopsies before it was finally diagnosed. Follow the pain - it is there for a reason. You may need to be more insistent than you are used to - but it will be worth it. Hugs.

Thrush maybe? I'd still get that checked out though. Seems like a long time for radiation sores but that would depend on the dose that that particular area of the tongue received. My doctors are just the opposite - I have already had 1 tongue excisional biopsy -turned out the culprit was my Water Pik -had it dialed in too hard and it irritated the tongue. The biopsy site still has some pain 4 years later...
