I took Metroprolol (50mg x2)after my 1st heart attack and bypass surgery. I personally didn't care for the side effects which were some dizziness/fatigue and being a beta blocker, it put a hard ceiling on heart rate/activities. I'm also on Lisinopril (5mg x1). My cardiologist eventually switched me over to a low dose Carvedilol (3.125mg x2) which I've had no issues with.

Joined: Nov 2002 Posts: 3,552 | Started with a low dose - 1/2 tab, 12.5mG, twice daily. BP got down to 62/42, not noticing a lot of difference between it and the Atenolol, but its still early.

Joined: Nov 2002 Posts: 3,552 | Update on BP - Dumped all of the meds. They were mostly making my BP drop too low so with this baroreflex failure, managing BP can be a challenge.

Joined: Dec 2003 Posts: 2,606 Likes: 2 | I think that's a much better approach, long term. You can try to manage the high and risk the low or vice versa. I found exercise to be the best thing. I'm on Pentoxyfilline again and now I am getting blood into the brain stem area, I am seeing the heart rate and blood pressure modulate. 8 days ago I couldn't walk the length of the driveway but back to 2 miles a day. It's been like this since around 2009.

Joined: Nov 2002 Posts: 3,552 | I have to agree with you - simple exercise, such as walking, makes a world of difference. What was happening to the BP meds is that because my BP fluctuates so wildly that, even if it is high, that only lasts for 15 minutes or less, so as long was I don't have another stroke. Taking the meds would almost always overcompensate and cause my BP to crash.
