My husband is near the end of treatment and has horrible hearing loss...but they said it could be caused from the mixtures of the chemo and the radiation combos...he had cisplatin as the very beginning for the 5 days chemo treatments but now gets something different for the weekely chemos...I hope his isn't permanent...it comes and goes right now..some days are worse than others...good luck!

Welcome to OCF! I have moved your post to its own thread so you will get some replies.

If your husband has had any changes in his hearing he needs to tell the doc immediately. If he is being given cisplatin the hearing loss can be permanent. He should NOT be given even one more dose of the cisplatin. If you are unsure of what he is getting please ask and make certain he isnt getting something mixed with the cisplatin.

Best wishes!

Welcome! I'm new here also and a caregiver.

My husband also had Cisplatin, I will second what Christine says please tell the Doc asap. Also the audiologist told us to protect my husbands hearing when he started to have hearing loss, we got him some foam ear plugs when he would be in overly noisy places, this can't hurt.

Good morning - I'm sorry you have to be here, but welcome to the family anyway.

Side effects from treatment can be anywhere from basically a non-event all the way up to miserable. Where your husband will fit on that spectrum is anyone's guess as none of us are the same.

Tell us some more about your husbands cancer so we can get to know him and you better and provide more relevant advice. Creating a signature at the bottom of your posts will help a lot. At the top of this page is a green triangle; click on it, select Edit Profile and near the bottom of the page is where you enter what you want to say. Click save when done. Read some other members posts to see the types of things they put in their signature to help you get an idea.

If your husband is also receiving radiation, being near the end of treatment any side effects he has will be near their worst. That worst will stick around for some weeks after treatment is over, but then things will start to slowly get better. I'm 4 months post treatment and most things have returned to normal except taste for food and throat dryness.

Again welcome to the family, we will help you get through this.

12/13 taste gone, dry mouth,
02/14 hair slowly returning
05/14 taste the same, dry sinuses, irrigation helps.
01/15 food taste about 60% returned, dry sinuses are worse in winter.
12/20 no more sinus problems, taste pretty good

The stringy mucous and radiation, post Tx, doesn't help the eustachian tubes. It was quite a while until my hearing didn't feel like I was at 20,000'. Like Christina and others have stated, cisplatin can cause permanent hearing loss, but it is fairly rare. I had cisplatin and my audiology tests showed an improvement, but I often do things backwards, just ask my wife.
