I used mine for 5 years PT. I've always taken care of my teeth and have been fortunate not to have any teeth/gum problems before or after rad. My dentist was the one that blessed me stopping after 5 years so obviously do get the opinion(s) of professionals before you stop.

Initially I was told to keep using them for life. No one has suggested otherwise and I'm approaching the 5 year mark. Although my dentist did say about a year ago that I could cut back on the every night usage of the trays to a few times a week and just brush with the Prevident the other nights. I sometimes do this but it's more like 1 or 2 nights per week off the trays. That's mainly because my RO suggested I keep using them. I'm hoping to see her again for a checkup in January and will ask again. Guess I figure since it's no big thing and I really really really want to keep my teeth, what the hell!

(oh and like my compadre just above I've always taken good care of my teeth and had and have no problems that required any extractions or other dire methods back before I started treatment)

thanks guys, I am diligent about my teeth, floss, brush well after meals, fluoride rinse. I read about the troubles some of us have, that is one I do not want!

I really want to keep my teeth right where they are!!!!

Hi Steve, I am past the six year mark and this NOV 21 at me annual check up with the Cancer Team to a person told me that I will be using them for life if they have any say in the matter. Just food for thought!! Semper-Fi Bob

They switched me from the trays to prescription Prevident with very high fluoride content. My teeth have taken quite a beating from the radiation. I've lost one tooth, had a root canal on #31 which was right in the radiation field (and I am having more problems with it) and have had pretty severe gum recession. I am meticulous in my dental care, Water Pik, woven floss, perio-aid, etc. Evidently the risk of ORN is less in persons who received IMRT or other targeted radiation. We'll see...
