I also have had regular 6 month dental checkups for my whole life, and have never so much as had a cavity. However, about 6 weeks ago I noticed a small (no more than a mm or 2), hard, slightly movable but painless bump on my lower left gums, towards the back of my mouth. I didn't think much of it, just assumed it was an ulcer or something, but about a week ago I also noticed the feeling of something being caught in my throat when I swallow. At the same time I developed cold-like symptoms (runny nose, post-nasal drip, sore throat). I went to the dentist a few days ago who took a few x-rays. He could not determine what was wrong, just that my teeth were fine and it did not seem to be related to the wisdom teeth extraction I had a few years ago. He put me on antibiotics and I have an appointment to come back on the 29th. He says he will take a biopsy if it is still there. So I guess I was wondering if it is safe to wait that long? And whether anyone else had a similar presentation of symptoms? Thank you so much! | | | | Joined: Jun 2007 Posts: 10,507 Likes: 7 Administrator, Director of Patient Support Services Patient Advocate (old timer, 2000 posts) | Administrator, Director of Patient Support Services Patient Advocate (old timer, 2000 posts) Joined: Jun 2007 Posts: 10,507 Likes: 7 | Any sore you have in your mouth for 2 or 3 weeks needs to be checked by a professional. Most of us will go to an ENT or oral surgeon for a biopsy. No all dentists will do one. Early diagnosis means its easier to treat but waiting until the 29th shouldnt be a big deal. It could be any number of things besides oral cancer. hope it turns out to be nothing serious.
