I was wondering what it is like to have the port removed. Kevin just had his 2 year PET and it is still clear, so he is considering having the port removed. Does it hurt? Are you asleep? Pain afterwards? Dangers?

Joined: Dec 2003 Posts: 2,606 Likes: 2 | I had mine taken out Ina procedure room at the doctor's office. A shot of lidocaine a few scissor snips and out it came. Couple stitches and no problems.

Joined: Jul 2012 Posts: 3,267 Likes: 4 | I never had mine taken out, except I believe, when I had sepsis, septic shock in the hospital, which is one risks for keeping them, but later put another one in, but was out if it to really to remember. The same with the peg tube. Good luck.

Joined: Nov 2009 Posts: 212 | it was so so simple. In the doc's office, maybe took 15 min. no pain. just maybe the easiest ordeal in the whole treatment!

SSC of undetermined orgin , early july 09
40 tx radiation, 8 chemo cisplatin and ebuterx
finished TX in mid Sept 09
Clear at the 6 year mark!
Back to swimming, biking and running! just a tad slower
never regained my weight, even when I eat lots and lots, just a skinny guy now
Just way glad to be seeing the green side up!

Joined: Jun 2007 Posts: 10,507 Likes: 7 | My port was surgically removed. I think I was kept overnight in the hospital "just in case". It wasnt a big deal but I did have a couple dissolveable stitches.

Joined: Jul 2007 Posts: 939 | Bill's port removal required an outpatient visit to a surgical center. I think he got just some light sedation and a local at the port site. Took a morning for both of us since I needed to drive home.
Bill said really no pain. He did have to go back for a retained suture which was keeping the skin area flared up. Once that was out, he healed quickly.

TREATMENT START: 8/9/07 cisplatin/taxol X 7..IMRT twice daily X 31.5.

PEG OUT: 1/08
PORT OUT: 4/09
FOLLOWUP: Now only annual exams. ALL CLEAR!
