Joined: Jun 2013 Posts: 49 | Today, Richard's last radiation treatment (hopefully). Tomorrow, a new chapter starts, healing and dealing (with collateral damage). Thank you folks, for ALL your support, during this grueling couple of months! Will continue to check in to update, especially after the actual results. 65 yr old male in great health other than C. 5/1/13 lump discovered, 5/15 Biopsy, 5/29 PET/CAT, Diag: SCC HPV+ rt tonsil, 1 node, Stage III T1-2 N1, 6/10 PEG, 06/17 Chemo, 6/24 Radiation, 7/6 100% PEG, 8/14 Done with treatment, 11/6 follow-up PET, 11/8 NED, 11/13 PEG removed!

Metastatic SCC. Stage III. HPV positive with occult primary. N1, no ecs
7/1/11 - L-Selective neck dissection. Tonsillectomy. All clean. No rad, no chemo.
5/29/13 - Found primary
7/3/13 - TORS
7/8/13 - Emergency Surgery/Blood vessel burst in throat
8/9/13 - Peg in
9/3/13 - Radiation starts 30 IMRT, 60gy BOT, 56gy both sides of neck
10/14/13 - Radiation ended!
11/12/13 - PEG out!

DX Dec '10 SCC BOT T4aN2bM0 HPV+ve.Cisplatin x3 35 IMRT.
PET 6/11 clear.
R) level 2-4 neck dissection 8/1/11 to remove residual node - necrotic with NED
Feb '12 Ca back.. 3/8/12 total glossectomy/laryngectomy/bilat neck dissection/partial pharyngectomy etc. clear margins. All nodes negative for disease. PEG in.
March 2017 - 5 years disease free. Woohoo!

Great milestone to get past but do keep in mind that MOST of us had our worst time the few weeks POST treatment so be prepared if that happens and do understand it's entirely normal.

Age 58 at Dx, HPV16+ SCC, Stage IV BOT+2 nodes, non smoker, casual drinker, exercise nut, Cisplatin x 3 & concurrent IMRT x 35,(70 Gy), no surgery, no Peg, Tx at Moffitt over Aug 06. Jun 07, back to riding my bike 100 miles a wk. Now doing 12 Spin classes and 60 outdoor miles per wk. Nov 13 completed Hilly Century ride for Cancer, 104 miles, 1st Place in my age group. Apr 2014 & 15, Spun for 9 straight hrs to raise $$ for YMCA's Livestrong Program. Certified Spin Instructor Jun 2014.

Unfortunately, you'll be on the job for more than your two weeks notice as the first 4 weeks or so of recovery are every bit as tough as the last few weeks of treatment. He's going to be cooking for a while and feeling pretty crummy. He'll start to turn the corner at around 3-4 weeks.
Congrats on getting through treatment and best wishes, positive thoughts and prayers on the recovery.

I will remember and put back on my "mercy" cap. I was so ready to retire it (or hang it up, next to Richard's radiation mask, which he proudly brought home).
The next month will definitely look different/better, with hopefully a more normal "new" routine than our daily and weekly dates with radiation/chemo.

Time to rest and focus on good nutrition and hydration for the next year so he will recover easier. Very soon, only a couple more weeks he will begin to feel a little better.
