let's assume a Stage I cancer of the tongue has been surgically removed.
Is it always necessary to reconstruct?
I assume reconstruction has no effect on prognosis.

Joined: Jun 2007 Posts: 10,507 Likes: 7 | Some patients have the tumor surgically removed and are fine without anything else done. It depends on where the tumor is located and how much tissue is removed. Some patients will have a small section of skin from usually the wrist area moved over to replace what was removed from the tongue. Its all individualized and on a case by case basis.

Joined: Dec 2010 Posts: 5,264 Likes: 5 | Ditto what christine said. It depends on size - stage one is usually under 1.5 cm in size. If it is in a location that won't effect functionality, then they may not rebuild. I was stage 2 had mine rebuilt.
