Just wondering what the recommended time table is for scans. My husband completed treatment the first part of April a year ago and is scheduled for follow-up appointments and his usual scope June 18th. I have asked twice about what the plans are to both the ENT doctor and his chemo doctor who calls himself the quarterback for all of Jeff's treatment. (Funny because he was the last one to get on board.) Only received one message from him mainly about scheduling to have his port out and this one statement "The risk of recurrence goes down with time and PET has diminishing returns."

Doesn't really answer my question and the ENT was suppose to discuss it in the tumor board meeting 2 weeks ago and haven't heard back.

With his rare and aggressive cancer I would think that another scan would be good. He had one 3 months and 8 months after treatment.

Husband diagnosed Oct '11 Cancer of the vocal cord Nov '11 removed right vocal cord. Neck Dissection, cancer in one node, .2, very small & contained) Jan '12 Radiation and Cisplatin, 6 doses. June '12 & Dec '12 clear Pet scan. April '13 Celebrating 1 year cancer free since treatment ended.

no later than 6 months post treatment for most, and see 3-6 months was changed for that, and even the post scan is recommended only for certain HNC, T3-4, N2-3 disease by the NCCN. After that, there are no set dates, and depends on the doctor, and hospital. My first post scan was 8 months due to medical reasons. I was never out of treatment after that for more than 6 months, so I had many scans, 12 or so in three years, but my doctors at two different CCC, mentioned every six months. My next scan is in August, and last one was in February.

I posted an article a few months ago about scanning on regular basis, after a post treatment scan, had little benefit, other than for any suspicions. Alternately, I did read elsewhere that PET's are more accurate in finding cancer, maybe in lymphs, more than a physical exam, which can go as small as 5mm, even before being felt.

You can always keep requesting one. Good luck
