Joined: Jan 2009 Posts: 476 | Hi. John is halfway through his hyperbaric dives and will be having his tooth extracted next Wednesday. Within the past few days he has noticed his distant vision is blurry. He only wears glasses for reading. I know that this is one of the side affects from the HBO dives. Just wondering how long his vision will be affected? Thanks! Wanda

Joined: Jul 2012 Posts: 3,267 Likes: 1 | Some peoples vision improves with HBO, some get blurry, but it doesnt last long, but tell the dr. Mine was a little blurry when I got out for a few minutes, and then seemed to adjust. Good luck with the extractions.

Joined: Jun 2007 Posts: 10,507 Likes: 7 | Im currently doing HBO again and yes, the blurry vision is normal. Its happened to me every time Ive done the HBO.
With your husband doing more dives expect his vision to get worse before it gets better. If your husband is doing the 20 HBO prior to the extraction and then 10 afterwards, expect his vision to begin to get better about 2 weeks after finishing the dives. It will take a week or 2 to slowly get his vision back to what it normally is.

Joined: Feb 2005 Posts: 118 Likes: 1 | Wanda, my experience with HBO was different than Christine's. My vision did not return to baseline following HBO dives. My vision began to deteriorate during my initial 60 dives and further deteriorated a year later with 30 more dives. I had early cataracts and my opthalmologist said that HBO may have accelerated cataract growth. I was 63 at the time of my initial HBO. The good thing is that my vision is still correctable with glasses.

Joined: Sep 2002 Posts: 642 | HBO has badly hurt my vision, which does not seem to be improving two weeks after my last dive.. Yesterday I visited my optometrist and learned that my distance prescription had doubled and still cannot be corrected to 20/20, leading to the conclusion that the 40 dives caused my cataracts to "ripen", requiring cataract surgery. I did order some plain (inexpensive) distance lenses which the optometrist put in old frames of mine so I can drive safely until I get the surgery, but since I did not order bi-focals, I have to put on my old pair in order to read or use the computer, or do anything up close, including eating.
Oh well, this too will pass, and from what I hear, vision can greatly improve once the lenses are replaced in the cataract surgery.

Diagnosed July 1, 2002, chemo and radiation treatments completed beginning of Sept/02.
