Joined: Jun 2011 Posts: 54 | I know everyone is different but I'm curious . I got a trach put in as precaution and now the stoma is healing. When does it close ? It's my first time I had one from my recent surgery and I'm just bugged by it. My pathology report should be done soon too. I try not to get to bummed during his healing period.
Age 44. Diagnosed at 34 (2006) with T1N0 SCC tongue on right side. Neck dissed & 6 weeks Radiation. 30% tongue removed. Never smoked;
2nd recurrence 1/2013 on left side. Surgery to remove 2/2013 forearm flap/neck dissec T1N0; brachytherapy 4/2013;
3rd recurrence 11/2015 mandibulectomy for jaw bone cancer Stage IV/no lymph node involvement

The hole from the trach can take a few weeks to fully close. Since you had radiation before, it may take a little longer to heal than if you had not had radiation. If its taking more than a month then I suggest seeing your doc about it. There are wound care specialists who can help with all kinds of procedures and different treatments to help heal stubborn wounds.

Joined: Sep 2012 Posts: 381 | Mine was stictched, but "whistled" and made other strange noises for about 2 weeks until that stopped, so I expect that was about the time it had fully closed. The stiches were removed after 17 days.

Sept 21/13 clear CT with anomaly thought to be the artery, being watched closely.

Joined: Sep 2009 Posts: 701 Likes: 1 | My husband's stoma closed within days without stitches but I do remember that he had to use sterile gauze to cover it when he wanted to speak. Otherwise he also had that whistling thing going on, too.
If you have to cough, using the gauze to put light pressure over the stoma will keep it from opening.

Joined: Dec 2010 Posts: 5,264 Likes: 5 | Hi there. I didn't have stitches either... Mine took about 2 weeks to close. I used steri strips to keep the ends together and then a gauze to allow it to heal - worked like a charm, and I could even swim in Mexico.

Joined: Jun 2011 Posts: 54 | Thanks for the tips. My sleep doesn't seem the greatest because of the stoma. I feel congested. Do you have any tips to help feel clearer? Did you have a similar experience?

Joined: Sep 2012 Posts: 381 | I coughed a fair bit for a couple of weeks, but that went away as well, gradually. I'm an insomniac, so I was actually sleeping more than usual (usual being 3 hours per night).
