Hello again,
My husband is also a laryngectomee.
Does your husband use a nebulizer at all? This aerosolizes saline into the breathing tubes/lungs with the prime aim of adding water to the mucous to enable it to be coughed up easily. As it is winter in your part of the world do you also run a humidifier in your home ? The heated air in a warm home is very dry and a laryngectomee will need to add moisture to their environment too.
Other things you can do are run the shower and get him to breathe in the steamed up room for about 30 mins or so.
Fill a bowl with boiling water and get him to lean over it and breathe in the steam. This works better if you put a towel over his head and neck.
Also having a shower and getting a small amount of water in the stoma also produces a strong forceful cough.
Some Laryngectomees use a medicine called guanefisine( spelling) to help dry up the secretions if they are producing too much. Talk to a pharmacist about this one.
Have you looked at
www.webwhispers.com This is a very helpful and informative site just for the laryngectomee .
Hope some of this is helpful,
Tammy
