Joined: Dec 2012 Posts: 2 | Hi. I am new to this group. It's been 4 years since my mother has passed away from oral cancer, and it still makes me so sad and hurt. I feel like there was something that could have been done to help her, but I don't know. She was diagnosed with tongue and neck cancer in January, 2008. She went in for surgery, had part of her tongue removed and had some lymph nodes removed from her neck. I got a call on July 1, 2008, only six months after my mom's surgery, saying that my mom was not going to make it. It was the worst day of my life. My mom was 51 when she passed. This cancer took my mom's life so fast. It's still so hard for me to cope.

Female 34. Non smoker, casual drinker
Dx July 12 stage 1 scc to left tonsil n0 m0. Hpv + 16 . 7 weeks daily rads finished sept 2012. 3 mth scan - low activity in primary spot hopefly t's just inflam. 2013 Abnormal tissue next base of tongue, came back negative. 5 month scan all clear!!!!! Yayy

Age 58 at Dx, HPV16+ SCC, Stage IV BOT+2 nodes, non smoker, casual drinker, exercise nut, Cisplatin x 3 & concurrent IMRT x 35,(70 Gy), no surgery, no Peg, Tx at Moffitt over Aug 06. Jun 07, back to riding my bike 100 miles a wk. Now doing 12 Spin classes and 60 outdoor miles per wk. Nov 13 completed Hilly Century ride for Cancer, 104 miles, 1st Place in my age group. Apr 2014 & 15, Spun for 9 straight hrs to raise $$ for YMCA's Livestrong Program. Certified Spin Instructor Jun 2014.

David R. 65 yr old male non-smoker, light drinker, stage 3 or 4, depending on which doc you ask, scc rt. tonsil, 2 nodes, 7 weeks radiation and chemo. No surgery. Teatment ended 3/20/08. PET scan 8/08 showed no cancer.
And now, as of oct, 2010, caregiver to wife, Linda, with breast cancer.
May, 2013, Linda diagnosed with stage 3 ovarian cancer. Enuf already.

Brother 49yo DX 22/6/11 Tonsil SCC HPV+ Stage IV T4N1(?)M0. Carbo/docetaxel (Taxotere)19/7, 11/8 (with E-tux), 1/9; E-tux 11/8, 25/8, 15/9, 30/9, 14/10, 28/10; IMRT X 35 (70gy tumour;63gy nodes;56gy gen area) 19/9-4/11/11. Clear PET scan 1/2/12. 1 and 2 year post treatment checks good.

Joined: Oct 2011 Posts: 805 | I agree with Linda; If your Mom was only 51 when she passed away, you must be quite young. I'm so sorry. Our oldest daughter was 26 when my husband was diagnosed. It was very hard on her.
I hope that you have an opportunity to speak with someone about your grief. Be sure not to keep it bottled up, even if you just write to us here and vent. This disease stinks, there's no 2 ways about it. It is always sad when we lose a friend or relative to it.
