Just finished my 15 rad treatment. I was doing pretty well on the pain side until now. My tongue feels like it is on fire. Anyone find something that works for the tongue pain?

Try rinsing several times a day with a mixture of 16 oz warm water, 2 tsp baking soda and 2 tsp salt. if the salt burns, cut it back to 1 tsp or if necessary omit it. Also ask your doc for a prescription for magic mouthwash, it will numb your mouth.

I used Orajel on my tongue, but only on the parts of my tongue that really hurt. I think Colgate makes something similar. It actually worked better/lasted longer than any of my prescription stuff. I just screamed a bit when I first put it on - then the numbness would set in. As Christine says - a rinse might work better if it's your whole tongue.

I'd also recommend viscous lidocaine, it's a prescription medication that your docs should be able to get you very easily and it helped me a lot.

Could also be Thrush so have it checked out as Thrush won't go away unless treated by Diflucan.

My burning tongue has improved. My issue right now is thick stringy white saliva. I have chemo tomorrow and I will have the docs check for thrush. I walk around with a spit cup. This is nasty stuff.

Very Very Typical. This phase will last appx 2 to 3 weeks and then will give way to dry mouth conditions. I walked around with a small styrofoam cup in my pants pocket and would spit in it constantly. GROSS but effective. Some have it so bad that they rent a suction device.

Doc said no thrush as of yet. He had some name for it, not quit sure what he called it. This is typical.

As usual David's "spit on".

I use TESS Cream (triamcinolone acetonide buccal paste), very effective.
This is available in India, don't know about other countries.
