I understand that the radiated tissue never improves and that implants are probably not recommended for most of us...The great news is that I have excellent health and quality of life now at 60 and 10 years after treatment... Have about 1/3 to 1/2 saliva (thank God and treatment) and can eat just about anything including jalepeno..unfortunately my teeth had peridontial issues for years and I have had some teeth removed after 3 yrs with Hyperbaric Therapy (dives)...I may currently have a failure of a 15 year implant and will probably have it removed...Is it possible my tissue could be ok now after all this time?? Anyone have any experience?

From what I have learned about HBO, you would need to go thru 20 prior and 10 after for extractions. The damage done by radiation will make your healing slower. If you are only having an implant replaced, that procedure should not need HBO.

Its always nice to hear from long term survivors! Good luck!!!

My husband is going to be glad to hear about the jalapeno - he is really missing it! Maybe next year!

It took me about 3-4 years to get most everything back..If he has any saliva then it could be very good...I also noticed a big step change in my mouth with soreness and taste improvement after HBO therapy because of the tooth extraction....I think about late year three. I went from a feeding tube, with several treatments to restretch my esophogaus so I could eat again, no taste of sugar, to tasting chocolate again...So tell him to hang in there with it and be encouraged as things do get much better with time!

WOW, I won't give up hope on spicy foods! Funny you mention teeth loss. I had another one extracted today due to jaw bone deterioration. Averaging one per year but the way I look at it most of my family had dentures by my age and didn't experience what we've been through so YAY! Very thankful.
Pass the hot sauce (Someday I hope)!

Steve, hope you are getting HBO for your extractions. It could help you to avoid a huge problem later.

Had the HBO for tooth extraction about 8 months ago. Slow healing process but the HBO did it's job.

I am potentially getting one implant removed and perhaps replaced..wondering if it might be possible to get new implants in other radiated locations now after after all this time? Do you or has anyone had a tooth implant since radiation? Just wondering if any new advancements or technology is out there since 2002?
