Seems like I have gotten a mild case of thrush. Im on meds so it will be gone quickly so its not a big deal just another inconvenience. I remember reading something about thrush and food a long time ago but cant find it. For some reason I seem to remember not to eat anything white. Does anyone know if there are any foods to avoid when you have thrush?

Christine,
This is coincidental because I was just searching on the internet for home remedies for thrush. On the University of Iowa Hospitals website, among their tips for thrush, is to eat plain unsweetened yogurt to help change the pH of the mouth. Also to eat such yogurt with antibiotics. So then I decided to search here & noticed your post!

I have a slightly different problem, some brown patches which they told me were bacteria (dry tongue combined with a course of antibiotics) at my regular check-up recently. They just told me to brush my tongue and use baking soda to help change the pH. They (ENT & personel at MD Anderson) said it was like thrush in regard to an unbalanced mouth environment. So then I was looking up thrush. I guess mine is getting better, it just isn't gone and the soda makes my mouth drier.

Anyway, I eat a lot of plain yogurt too. So you might not need to stop eating yogurt. I think the deal with eating yogurt when you have thrush is that it might not clean off the tongue as easily. Personally, I am thinking of trying probiotics for the first time in my life.

Hey there - probiotics are good - live ones really help - actually for me they used to get my motility going!!! (that helps a lot with constipation) i would buy the live refrigerated capsules with cranberry. Also wasn't the thrush also a sugar related thing? Haven't been blessed with that little bit of fun yet. Perhaps because my sugar intake is close to nil. I use agave nectar to sweeten my foods and my shake mix has either stevia or xylitol for sweetness - none of which affect blood sugar. My only sugars are from fruits and fruit juices. And I dont eat white flour foods! (yeast???) I also thought I was coming down with a bit of thrush at one point so I swished with the infamous honey for a day and after that my tongue was a nice pink again! Have a great weekend!

Hummm, This is all to interesting. It was my understanding that Plain Yogurt was good for the Thrush. I have it on hand anytime the Thrush strikes. It helps with the burning, until I can get the medication and sometimes controls the Bacteria in the mouth. Yes, limit Sugar.

So more info on this would be great. I am going through an attack right now..I also bought a water pik to help with oral cleaning. My gums are receeding. frown What a pain!

Take care ..

I was unsure about the yogurt too. I couldnt remember if I was supposed to eat yogurt or to avoid it. Per the online Mayo Clinic it says to eat unsweetened yogurt.

For healthy adults and children
If you're a healthy adult or child with oral thrush, eating unsweetened yogurt or taking acidophilus capsules or liquid may help lessen your infection. Yogurt and acidophilus don't destroy the fungus, but they can help restore the normal bacterial flora in your body. If your infection persists, your doctor will prescribe an antifungal medication.

Semi Thrush expert here...At least one paper (study) concluded that the active cultures are only beneficial for vaginal yeast infections and something called probotic cheese has proven beneficial for oral Thrush. I haven't looked for this cheese. I have, on the advice of my PCP and my dentist, been using Activia daily since my last Thrush bout months ago but it didn't seem to help this latest bout which was caused my me taking antibiotics to wipe out a nasty bacterial infection which also upset my fragile tongue community.

Hi Chistine,
The yogurt is good for thrush if it has 'live yogurt cultures' in it. Things to avoid are any thing with yeast - alcohol, mushrooms, etc. Antibiotics and any meds can cause thrush. It normally begins in the bowel and travels up. Like a baby has oral thrush a lot. There is a liquid med [which Rod & I both found better than the tablets] called Nilstat. Maybe see if you can get some of that. You can increase your dietary intake of yoghurt or lactobacillus, the active ingredient, or acidophilus. The youhurt is a soother, not a cure. You would be better off getting the live cultures in a liquid or powder form. Your pharmarcist should be able to help. Junk food, sugar and I have even read honey. Hope this helps a little - payback for all the times you have been there for me...xxxxx
