If the ENT's demeanor is affecting your dad's mental state, I'd consider changing ENT's. You can get a different ENT (at least in the US, you can) sometimes, without much effort. We changed doctors in the middle of treatment. J's former ENT actually recommended changing RO's to us within his group and had names.
If you are dealing with an insurance company/health plan, they can usually make the changes quickly and can help locate a replacement if you are unable to get recommendations from people you know. One of our multiple recommendations for our new RO came from a volunteer with our local chapter of the American Cancer Society.
I was able to get J switched to a new provider group within 24 hours. Also, I was able to work backwards from the RO we wanted, to get to an ENT (who was actually my ENT) who would refer to the RO and MO, and then to a referring primary care physician (who was also my PCP) who would start the referral process to the ENT. If J ends up needing an MO and an RO, I already have good ones picked out and they are on our health plan.
Your dad's confidence in his doctors can make a huge difference in how he handles getting through treatments and things that tend to crop up afterwards. Being mentally prepared as a patient and having a doctor who understands the whole person not just his/her disease are big factors for a successful outcome. Your dad deserves to have competent care and to be handled with consideration.
I hope the problem with your dad's eye resolves without any further problems.
Take care,
Sandy
