Joined: May 2008 Posts: 551 | Had a little scare about a month ago, a small lump appeared on the left side base of my neck, below where my cancer had been. I already had a regular appointment scheduled to see my surgeon so I requested a fresh set of scans, CT and PET/CT, so I could get results in that appointment. Of course, the surgeon was out sick and missed clinic but I was able to get in the following week, which was this past Tuesday.
Well... the lump is muscle not lymph node as I'd feared! The doc explained that one of the longer term effects of radiation is dissolving of fat, which I'd not heard before. So this lump of muscle has always been there, but covered by a fat layer. As the fat dissolved, it became more prominent.
I don't have to tell you all how relieved I am that this isn't recurrence and also how strange/disconcerting it is to be still figuring out my 'new normal' after nearly three years.

We just see/feel something strange that pops up overnight, and BAM, our fears begin all over again. I am so happy you have nothing to worry about. It's a wonder everyone on this Forum isn't white headed (those whose hair has come back, that is). It just never ends, but WE'RE ALIVE. PRAISE THE LORD! Congratulations on good results.

Age 58 at Dx, HPV16+ SCC, Stage IV BOT+2 nodes, non smoker, casual drinker, exercise nut, Cisplatin x 3 & concurrent IMRT x 35,(70 Gy), no surgery, no Peg, Tx at Moffitt over Aug 06. Jun 07, back to riding my bike 100 miles a wk. Now doing 12 Spin classes and 60 outdoor miles per wk. Nov 13 completed Hilly Century ride for Cancer, 104 miles, 1st Place in my age group. Apr 2014 & 15, Spun for 9 straight hrs to raise $$ for YMCA's Livestrong Program. Certified Spin Instructor Jun 2014.
