I hesitate to respond because it is probably not the same but this swelling is very similar to my husband's swelling. He was given steroids and antibiotics that did not help and finally had a PET scan where they found that a residual/recurrant mass was impeding blood flow. His swelling does come and go and this is because the vessels find a way to reroute the blood flow. I hope you find your answer soon along with painless resolution!

I have swelling but not on my cheeks. Under my chin on both sides and boy does it look like a little grinnie storing nuts. Has the Dr checked it yet?

Since posting this. UPMC, Pittsburgh, Oct 2011 until Jan. I averaged about 2 to 3 surgeries a week there. w Can't have jaw made as bone is deteroriating steaily that is left in jaw. Mersa is to blame. Feeding tube . Had trach for 4mos. Got it out April.

My husband has had numerous post radiation infections that looked like this. They always present on the same side as his cancer. His surgeon said it was swelling of his parotid gland. A few weeks on a strong antibiotic usually wipes them out. Get to a doctor asap as they can quickly get out of control. The first one he had occurred within a week of completing rads and he had to be hospitalized with IV steroids and antibiotics.

Good luck!

Thanks for the ideas!! He has been to several docs regarding this chipmunk effect! :o) He has been on Penicillin, Amoxicillian and Acyclovir. He has an ultrasound scheduled for today. PCP thinks it might be a blocked salivary duct. unfortunately, this is a direct duplicate of what they told up before his cancerous lymph was removed... Kind of discouraging!

Pain and swelling has been here on and off since week 2 of radiation(2 months ago). Rad Onco says it was too soon for it to have been caused by him... Actual "lump" appeared yesterday at around 3 inches on jaw moving to right below... It is hard and not very mobile. I am bringing the other US for them to compare it to.

The pain is incredible, which is the only thing keeping me hopeful! I know that not many cancerous lumps actually cause huge amounts of pain unless it is very far along. Keep us in your thoughts!! It is going to be a rough day!!!
