This is going to sound like a strange question. I go to the gym daily. OR at least I did. My question is - should I continue going? I feel good. I mean aside from the pain in the ass lesion on my tongue I feel healthy. And I miss my hour a day at the gym. But I am also concerned as exercise generally speeds up one's metabolism... And thus cell reproduction, and metabolism too...

Any ideas? I have my MRI tomorrow... Specialists appointment next week... then off to the races... But I was curious as to what everyone else thought about this.

Cheryl,

I tried to exercise all the way through treatment. I am a very physical person and really enjoyed working out. It was my goal to be almost through treatment and still running, doing resistance training and yoga...and then reality sunk in or should I say the effects of rads/chemo.

Personally the benefits of exercise are too numerous to name so I really think you should continue to be active and try and keep to your normal routine as long as you are able.

Keep your chin up!

Eric

I agree with Eric that you should continue exercising as long as you can. However, if you are scheduled for a PET scan you should avoid strenuous exercise for 12-24 hours before the PET scan.

Good luck with your tests and doctor appointments.

Thanks both of you for your feedback. I think I will continue to go. I do feel good... except for the knots in my stomach, but I gather it will take a LONG time to go away.
Susan - your cancer sounds very much like mine. I'm sorry about the recurrence. Best of luck.

Keep doing as much as you can as long as you can. Your body will definitely tell you when it has hit the wall. You won't have to ask yourself the question of "do I need to stop exercising". Getting up to go to the bathroom will be a major accomplishment some days near the end of treatment.

Thanks for the info... brought my runners to work today - will hit the gym on the way home. Arranged to join a friend for some private yoga time next week... gonna buy a some passes to a local place I used to go to. Aside from making me feel physically good. The yoga... particularly the meditation will quiet my mind I think... Thanks for all of your advice you are a great group of people.

Cheryl,
I was a woek out nut before treatment. I even use to tape my PEG tube to my chest! afrter a few weeks I was not able to run or bike but I did get in a daily walk! Actually it was more of a shuffle! It was good for me and great for my mind. It was a long comeback post treatment, but I just kept at it.
It was also a great social time for me. The folks I use to run/ride/swim with made sure I got out almost every day, made tough times much more tollerable
Good luck!
Steve
