Joined: Apr 2010 Posts: 14 | Post radiation and surgery, my Dad is having infections near his 2 teeth. Since, he has been advised not to have any dental work for 1 year. Now the dentist are prescribing anti biotics and anti inflamatory. Does anybody have similar issues. In case of additional infection, do they give a go ahead to remove the teeth? , he is almost 5 month post radiation. What are the issues in removing teeth at this stage?..and what are the other alternatives?.

Joined: Jun 2007 Posts: 10,507 Likes: 7 | If your father needs to have any teeth extracted then he will need to have HBO (hyperbaric oxygen treatments). He will need 30 of them, 20 prior and 10 after the teeth are pulled. This will help prevent ostioradionecrosis which is very painful. Make sure your father sees a dentist who is familiar with oral cancer patients, a prostodontist.
