Physically and mentally ive been so good. Going back to work half days, five days a week and really enjoying it. I've dug myself out of the black hole and is back to my happy self. Then what happens? I look in the mirror and notices that I've developed a double chin! All would be ok except that I'm only 47kg and have not put on any weight over the last few weeks but for some reason the area from my chin to my neck have swelled. It doesn't hurt at this stage but I'm in complete panic mode!! I don't know what it could possibly be. A few people have been telling me I've put on weight which I thought wad quite funny since I haven't. NowI know why- I look like I've put on weight in the face because if this double chin that I've developed. Now I have to wait til mon to try and make an app with a doc - guess no sleep til then. I dont want to tell my husband or family and make them worry too. Any comments or opinions would be welcomed. Thanx for listening guys.

His radioligist told him it is called a dulap and it is caused by drainage. But he said it should go away within a year. | | | | Joined: Nov 2006 Posts: 2,671 Patient Advocate (old timer, 2000 posts) | Patient Advocate (old timer, 2000 posts) Joined: Nov 2006 Posts: 2,671 | Get some sleep, Minh - My son also had that "double chin" and he was no heavyweight before cancer and lost a lot of weight with Tx. Not sure how long it took to go away but he sure doesn't have it now. And he's gained back all the weight he lost.

It really doesn't look or feel sinister but god it freaked me out when I saw it. It does kinda look like excess fluid build up. Trying to calm myself down, but I can't believe how easy it is to go from being ok to being in complete panic! It's 3am and i have yet to sleep, I keep thinking about it and praying that it's nothing ( I was never a religious person before). Thanx for your replies Anne Marie and Mickie.

Sounds like a common side effects of radiation. Thank you, thank you!!

I have also seen it called turkey waddle and dulap and most people who have had it say it disappears with time, some using massage techniques. If you have a look you will find more information here ; http://oralcancersupport.org/forums/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=69614&page=1In my case with surgery only I put back the weight I lost plus some so I have to call mine a double chin and scar down the middle that looks tighter now from the neck dissection. A bit light a zipper not done up properly! That's the wonderful thing about the forum. With a little research you can usually find the answers and there is always someone who can point you in the right direction or can answer your questions. Now after not much sleep last night try and have a nap sometime today Gabriele

i checked up on the post. Thank god for OCF!! I would be a complete mess without it and thanx for replying guys. Truly appreciate it. I too had to request for PT and speech therapy (after reading about it on this website), it was not offered to me. I'm seeing my PT soon so i will discuss the turkey waddle with her!!

It will get smaller but you will still see it. My wife has been after me for years to "get it fixed" but that's her answer to exercise. Our friend (the "fix it doc") says he can do it knowing I had rad but my RO says too risky re the healing so I continue to say no.

After what we've already been through i would not go for surgery for the turkey waddle either! Enough of hospitals and meds for me unless completely necessary! I freaked out because i thought my cancer has spread/come back. I can deal with a double chin, although not very attractive (and i'm in the fashion industry), i can live with it and so can my hubby!!! lol
