Hi Everyone,
My friend has finished her first round of chemo and just started with nausea, but her biggest complaint is the taste of "tin mouth". I know this is a common side effect-does anyone have any remedies that helped? Nurses said to try Jolly Rancher candies and to "keep on rinsing" with baking soda.
Thanks,
Liz

No matter how bad the taste is, I would stay away from the Jolly Ranchers. Of course, I'm a dentist and you expect me to say that. However, I would stick with the baking soda.

Or sugarless candies at least. Teeth after radiation decay easily!

One things that I was told was to avoid metal eating utensils (forks, spoons etc) and use plastic and also to cook in the microwave using ceramic bowls and such.

I never had the symptoms so I still have an industrial size box of plastic forks, and paper plates smile

Also, she may find that some foods or even water tastes terribly metallic while others are OK -- my husband found our normal tap water became very metallic-tasting maybe 3 weeks into treatment (about the time he had his first brush with thrush). I tried a lot of bottled waters and some of these were also no good, perhaps because many have high mineral content. Eventually he found that Poland Spring and also, the bottled water from Trader Joe's was OK. But I am sure that is an individual thing.

Salt/soda and also, l-glutamine rinses may help with the after-taste. Sometimes a fruity flavor (bit of applesauce, for example) helps take the bad taste away.

And as was posted above, avoid metallic utensils and dishes.
