My dad's doctor is planning on stretching his throat. Does anyone know how this is done? Will he be sedated? The Dr. thinks that if my dad's throat is stretched he will be able to get trach out. Please pray for him.

I hope everything turns out ok for your Dad. Let us know what happens.

It's called an endoscopy and I've had it done about 3 or 4 times since my treatments ended in January 08. You are sedated, but not strong because one of the times I had it done, I actually could hear them talking. Every time I have had it done, I can swallow better, but for not very long. Unfortunately, it's not permanent, or at least it isn't for me. Tomorrow they're also going to check some osteophytes (bone spurs) that are growing inside my throat to make sure that's not impeding on my swallowing. I had a swallow test, and the person who read it said it wasn't, but the doctor doing the endoscopy is going to check anyway. I hope your Dad does okay, and I will be thinking of him. Also, please say a little prayer for me too because I'm such a "chicken." Julieann

We have had discussions in the past about people who didn't have a PEG ending up with constriction problems so that's why I asked.

They put you in la la land and while they put the scope down your esophagus, they take small biopsies. After and most of the time you don't even notice it after uless the biopsy is one a little larger. Mine is from Esophageal surgery in 1996.

He found a small area around my stomach that's red; a peptic ulcer he thinks. With the prayers from you all, I... survived. Anyone know of a Swallowing Center? Boston: The one thing that I had to wait on was my turn because there was a lot of patients having endoscopies colonoscopies. I remember talking to the anesthetist one minute and the next minute I was back in the recovery room. Your Dad shouldn't have any trouble. My troat doesn't even hurt at all, but they said eat soft foods for the rest of the day - golly, I sure have plenty of that. I'll pray your Dad does as well. P.S., after I got the first part of my anesthia, I really didn't care anyway LOL. Julieann

I once was having a colonscopy, and halfway through it, my blood pressure started dropping, so they had to stop the anestheia. That tube thing was still in my intestines and they had to pull it out - eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeek! Maybe that's why I'm such a chicken for such a procedure, when I'm not in most other areas. Thanks for the prayer. Later, julieann
