Hi all;
I have been lurking and reading for the last couple of weeks and decided it was time to introduce myself.March of 2009 I was diagnosed type II diabetic, OK changed my diet, took my pills and started walking, lost 30 lbs. A1c 6.3 all in control. In October 2009 I turned 65 and went in for my welcome to medicare physical. Passed everything until it came to the mammo. Cancer rt. breast. stage 1 grade 2, 0 nodes. I had lumpectomey and 34 rads and put on Femara.
June 16 I went to my PC, reg diabetic checkup, and complained to her about a soreness and a bump under my tongue, thinking i was having an allergic reaction to the femara. no such luck. Went to ENT, biopsy and came back SSC T1 N0 M0. Had CT and every thing else is clear. Just got back from appt with surgeon and will have surgery next week.I will have a skin graft from leg and no radiation or chemo, at least not at this point. What I didn't ask is what about my meds for diabetes and all while you can't eat i know i will get the answers but am curious now Any info before surgery would be appreiciated.

Hello Flo. Glad you signed in. I lurked a while also (as many do) before making actual contact here. It's great that you caught this thing at stage one. While I am not a cancer patient, I have walked with my aunt through this process. She was also diagnosed in early stage and went through the surgery with no real problems (she is age 67). I feel sure that your docs will make sure you get the meds you need.
Will be thinking about you and praying for you.
Dodie

Hi Flo,

You should receive good information here from some of the other folks on this forum. My daughter has been going through this for some time now. Since her treatments started last year she has developed diabetes we have found out only type 2 and controlled with eating. She has been on a PEG for over a year now so it's difficult to translate that to your diabetes and treatment as you hopefully will get through surgery and heal. We are located here in Portland, OR and if you have further questions feel free to send a PM. Welcome and will be praying for you.

Bonnie

Hi all;
I go in for pre-op next wendsday and surgery thursday morning. I guess I will find out more on wed. Bonniey, where did your daughter have her surgerys done? I was refered to Dr. Andersen at OHSU. He is the director of the head and neck section and is a surgeon and an oncoligist so I do feel I am in good hands. he also told me he will relocate my saliva glands instead of removing them.I am wondering how long before I am feeling like myself again?

Welcome to OCF. There are a few members who are diabetic or are the caregiver to someone who has diabetes. Im sorry I do not have any experience with this.

Good that your cancer was caught early so hopefully the surgery will be an easy one. While chemo and radiation are difficult to go thru, it is something that will help ensure you are cancer free. You are being treated at a cancer center right?
