Dr did the camera down the throat and found a "polyp" on the left side-----Mike originally had no primary but 1 node positive on right side.
Surgery was last Monday, doc didn't think it was anything. Called for results Thursday, and was told the pathologist was consulting with another pathologist. Ok, start to freak out.
Friday doc calls and says no cancer; we saw him today and the path report says "mild dysplasia with hyperkeratosis".
It was not a vocal cord polyp, but it is not cancer either. Doc said could have resulted from radiation inflammation, and said if he biopsied other areas of throat he probably would have found dysplasia from radiation.
It could come back, but the key is to catch it early.
Any advice/comments are welcome.

I'm glad it wasn't cancer. I'm curious, though, what is mild dysplasia with hyperkertosis? Margaret ---------- C/G: Husband, 48 (at time of dx) Dx 5/18/07 SCC, BOT, lymph node involvement. T1N2BM0. Try using these sites. One is in the OCF website somewhere, and ask .com is universal
You just have to "type/search" for one word only and one at a time, then string together your answer. I use them when I need to know something stat and there is no time to wait for a response.
Almost all questions can be answered from this website, but you have to learn to navigate it.
They are in the process of revamping it to make it more user friendly. I learn everyday a new little tidbit about something.
When I can't sleep I surf the site and check out everything I can click on and say, oh, that

Mild dysplasia: normal or mildly disordered basal layer with retained maturation and stratification of upper layers; mild nuclear atypia and possibly mitotic figures in basal third of epithelium; no abnormal mitotic figures; variable keratosis and chronic inflammatory infiltrate
Or, as some one famous here always says, they are "cells which are no longer normal, but they are not really malignant yet...an in-between state, so to speak. Dysplasia's also do not always go completely over to the dark side, but they are a step in that direction"
The hyperkeratosis is just thickening cells.
So, to sum it all up in english, the results from the biopsy are "NON Cancerous, abnormal group of thick cells......"
I'll just have to remain watchful for "things", but who isn't doing that already.
Thanks for posting about it Jess, XXOO Mike
