Mine has been out for over 3 years now and is what I call my second navel. When I'm around small kids without a shirt, on rare occasions, I tell them it's an old gunshot wound. They always respond with "REALLY??!!". I have even been asked if that's what it is, usually by nursing folks, when going to other docs offices. Can't fool the docs though, the ones I have seen for other issues usually speak up and ask, "what did you have a PEG tube for"?

Female, nonsmoker, 70, diag. 5/09 after tongue biopsy: stage IV. Left hemi-gloss. and left selec. neck disec. 30 lymph nodes removed May 20. Over 7 weeks daily rads. with three chemo. PEG removed 12/4/09 Am eating mostly soft foods. Back to work 11/09 Retired 4/1/11. 7 clear scans! Port out 9/11. 2/13. It's back: base of tongue, very invasive
surgery involving lifestyle changes. 2/14: Now speaking w/Passey-Muir valve. Considering a swallow study. Grateful to be alive.

Joined: Jun 2007 Posts: 5,260 | I have 5 holes from Nissen Fundiplication surgery and have had a few Drs and Medical people ask if they are scars from my being shot. LOL I guess they do look a lot like bullet holes from years ago. LOL . Damn jealous husbands anyhow..
Since posting this. UPMC, Pittsburgh, Oct 2011 until Jan. I averaged about 2 to 3 surgeries a week there. w Can't have jaw made as bone is deteroriating steaily that is left in jaw. Mersa is to blame. Feeding tube . Had trach for 4mos. Got it out April.

Joined: Jul 2009 Posts: 453 | Steve is still waiting to get his peg out. Hasn't used it in about 6 weeks now but still his doctor says no. After all of the issues we had when it was first put in they are reluctant to put Steve through that again incase we need it. Very disappointing for Steve as he hates the rotten thing although he has gotten used to it. It must be very liberating to have it gone and to then be able to sleep on your stomach again for the first time in months.

01/2021 SCC stage 3 base of tongue diagnosed
01/03/2021 chemotherapy started.

Clear at the 6 year mark!
Back to swimming, biking and running! just a tad slower
never regained my weight, even when I eat lots and lots, just a skinny guy now
Just way glad to be seeing the green side up!

Age 58 at Dx, HPV16+ SCC, Stage IV BOT+2 nodes, non smoker, casual drinker, exercise nut, Cisplatin x 3 & concurrent IMRT x 35,(70 Gy), no surgery, no Peg, Tx at Moffitt over Aug 06. Jun 07, back to riding my bike 100 miles a wk. Now doing 12 Spin classes and 60 outdoor miles per wk. Nov 13 completed Hilly Century ride for Cancer, 104 miles, 1st Place in my age group. Apr 2014 & 15, Spun for 9 straight hrs to raise $$ for YMCA's Livestrong Program. Certified Spin Instructor Jun 2014.
