I also had the same thing as you Saagar, I was 36 at the time and had only surgery to remove the tumor, mine was in the left side of the hard palate. That was April 25, 2006 and I have had no problems since then. When I had the surgery they said all margins were clear... so I had to go for ch-ups and MRI every 6 months for 2 years now I just go once a year. It's a scary thing for sure and especially since you are SOOO young... please keep us posted and If you need someone to talk to whos been there feel free to email me!!! I'm bad about checking back in on

Hello

I found out on Dec. 21 I have mucoepidermoid carcinoma.
On Dec. 8 I had a tumor on the roof of my soft palet removed - my dentist found the tumor at a routine dental check-up - an ENT removed the tumor and a biopsy was done from there - so the tumor is out, I know it was cancer - but that's all I know. I was very disappointed in my ENT who gave me no information - just a diagnosis and a referral.
I'm now waiting for a call to set up an appointment at the University of Michigan Medical Center and am scared to death. I cried for two days and now am a little more composed.
I'm a 44-year-old mother of two, never smoked a day in my life and keep asking the "why me" and "what did I do to cause this."
Reading these posts has helped - but I still am on pins and needles with no real information to go by.
Just scared and nervous

CJP,
hello and welcome to the forum.
you need to repost this in "introduce yourself" so you can start your own personal thread. you can copy and paste this.
it is normal to be scared and nervous. you found the right place for a wealth of info and never-ending support.
take a pen and paper with you to your doctors appt. and write down everything. it will be impossible to remember everything the doctor will tell you, the termenology he will use, etc.
please let us know what the dr says.

CJP,

You will be in good hands at U of M as they have one of the best head and neck cancer programs in the nation. I am on the west coast of Michigan in South Haven and almost went to that side of the state for treatment, but the folks at U of M said the facility here in Grand Rapids was as good as what they have and my doctor was from U of M so they worked together.

I had treatment to the soft palet also. I did radiation only for an early stage SCC.

Things are working out OK for me so far. I have a few issues but they are almost all annoyances. Radiation was a BI**H but it was over before I knew it, and I was quick to mend.

Your at the right place for the treatment you will need. Good Luck and feel free in asking for any help.

Kelly

Thank you for the replies

I made appointments this morning for a CT Scan Sunday afternoon and appointment with the doctor first thing Monday morning in Ann Arbor. I have to admit, everyone i talked with today at U-M has been a great help.
I still don't know much, but at least things are in the works to get this taken care of and start treatment.
Again, thank you for the encouraging replies. It is greatly appreciated.
No one in my family - parents, aunts, anyone - has every been diagnosed with cancer so this is all entirely new to me. We've been blessed so far - but it just makes it that much scarier with no reference points to go by as far as treatments, etc.
Thanks again.

Just giving an update

I had a CT Scan Sunday at U-M and everything came back clear - no signs of cancer. Oncologist met with tumor board Monday night and is recommending another surgery to make sure area is clear and no further treatment. I'm so relieved. He did say this type of cancer has a high rate of re-occurrence - not what I wanted to hear - but at least now I know what to watch for.
Thank you for the support and a place to find some comfort and information.
Surgery is scheduled for Jan. 28 - not looking forward to recovery period for a second time, but am so thankful for the results.
