Geesh... Your boss sounds like a bit of a heartless scoundrel. Just my opinion. Start keeping a log of all the details (names, dates, times, conversations, etc.) in case you need to prove anything in the future. That being said, the best advice my lawyer ever gave me was "If it's not in writing, it's not 'real'." So, don't sign anything, and stick to your guns about having them put their promises in writing.
